The Day I Learned to Boil an Egg and Found Myself
A transformative culinary experience that revolutionized my breakfast routine

My Story
It was a Tuesday. Or was it a Wednesday? Time had lost all meaning in those dark days of 2023, when my world had crumbled around me like an overcooked soufflé. My partner of three weeks had left me for someone who knew how to make hollandaise sauce. My succulent garden had succumbed to root rot. Even my sourdough starter, whom I had named Bradley, had given up the ghost after I forgot to feed him for a month while binge-watching a documentary series about competitive dog grooming.
I stood in my kitchen that morning, surrounded by the debris of my former life - unused spice racks, a dusty instant pot, and seventeen different types of salt I had purchased during what I now call my 'sodium phase.' The morning light filtered through my unwashed windows, casting long shadows that seemed to mock my culinary incompetence.
That's when I saw it. A single egg, sitting in the refrigerator door, last survivor of a dozen I had purchased with such hope three months earlier. It seemed to glow with possibility, or perhaps that was just the refrigerator light reflecting off its pristine shell. Either way, I knew in that moment that this egg and I were destined to embark on a journey together.
But first, let me take you back to my childhood, to understand why this simple egg held such profound meaning for me...
Sacred Ingredients
- 💕1 large egg (preferably one that has been contemplating its existence in your fridge)
- 💕Enough water to cover the egg by 1 inch (approximately 4 cups, or 946.353 milliliters)
- 💕1 tablespoon of salt (for the water, not for your wounds)
- 💕Ice (for the bath, not for your heart)
- 💕Hope (just a dash)
- 💕Patience (more than you think you need)
Mindful Instructions
Fill a medium saucepan with water. As you do this, reflect on the metaphor of filling the empty vessel of your life.
Add salt to the water. Let each grain represent a tear you've shed over overcooked pasta.
Gently place the egg in the water using a spoon. Treat it with the tenderness you wish someone would show you.
Bring the water to a rolling boil over high heat. Watch the bubbles form and think about how they represent your dreams rising to the surface.
Once boiling, remove from heat and cover. Let sit for exactly 10 minutes for hard-boiled, or adjust based on your desired level of emotional vulnerability.
While waiting, prepare an ice bath and contemplate the duality of hot and cold, like your last relationship.
Transfer egg to ice bath. The shocking temperature change represents personal growth.
Peel carefully under running water, removing the shell like you're shedding your old self.
Season with salt and pepper, or tears if you're out of salt.
Madison's Pro Tips ✨
- 💡Older eggs peel easier, much like older wounds
- 💡Add vinegar to prevent cracking, both in eggs and in your psyche
- 💡The perfect egg, like the perfect life, doesn't exist - embrace the imperfections

What My Beautiful Readers Are Saying 💬
I used to be afraid of eggs. I was convinced I'd mess them up every time. But your step-by-step emotional guidance has liberated me! I'm now the 'Egg Whisperer' of my neighborhood. My therapist recommended this recipe for my anxiety and it's surprisingly therapeutic to crack an egg just right.
Do the chickens need to be free-range and listening to Mozart for optimal egg flavor? Also, this egg recipe is so good, it makes me want to write poetry. 'Ode to an Egg,' perhaps? My kids are begging me to make this every day!
I didn't have any eggs, so I used tofu. And instead of a frying pan, I used a wok. And I don't have a stove so I used a hair dryer. Still the most spiritually fulfilling breakfast of my life! This recipe gave me the courage to quit my job and pursue my dream of becoming a professional omelet artist.
